By definition, this required significantly less personnel, weaponry and military hardware, and logistical resources than the full-scale formation of a genuinely new, full-fledged "division"-level unit. – Its organizational structure is essentially "stripped-down" compared to a "classic" Soviet/Russian motorized rifle division. In practice, it possesses a large amount of infantry but lacks heavy weaponry (tanks, armored combat vehicles, air defense systems, and artillery). Moreover, two of its three "motorized rifle" regiments are effectively just infantry regiments with sporadic motor transport—rather than full-fledged motorized rifle regiments capable of significant, rapid advances within the tactical zone. – Currently, the 84th MRD holds the impressive-sounding title of "motorized rifle division" on paper; in reality, however, it is largely an enlarged (reinforced) semi-infantry brigade—far from a true motorized rifle division—tailored specifically for infantry-led assaults supported by drones and limited artillery. 4️⃣ Finally, here are a few conclusions and implications regarding the "birth" of this "highly specialized" (or, I would even say, "very strange") formation within the Russian forces operating in Ukraine. – In case anyone has forgotten, I would remind you that Russian forces are currently conducting the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk offensive operation as the primary operational-strategic component of their 2026 summer-autumn campaign. The troops of the GT "South"—and specifically its 3rd CAA—are playing a leading role in this effort. It is within the structure of this very army that the "newly formed" unit has been incorporated. In this context, it would have been logical to expect the 84th MRD to appear within the 3rd CAA sometime in late spring or early summer of this year. In reality, however, the initial steps to form the division likely began only LATE last summer—during the battles for Kostiantynivka. The 4th SMRBr, along with two additional regiments (the 1194th and 1465th MRRs) attached to it for reinforcement and commanded by the 4th SMRBr's leadership, played a direct and highly active role in those battles. At first glance, this decision by the Russian military command appears illogical. It would seem that the division should have been deployed BEFORE the fighting for Kostiantynivka began, rather than while it was underway or concluding. In reality, however, this decision is quite consistent and logical—provided one views the situation from the perspective of the Russian military command rather than relying solely on simple logic. The fact is that the Russian Sloviansk-Kramatorsk offensive operation is essentially divided into two main phases. The first involves the advance of the main forces—specifically the vanguard units of the Russian GTs "West," "South," and "Center"—to the immediate approaches of this urban agglomeration. The second phase is the actual direct assault (and capture) of the area, ideally executed "on the move" (without pausing to regroup). The first objective is being pursued through a series—or combination—of operational-tactical offensive operations across various axes within the operational zones of these three troop groupings, all linked by a unified operational concept.
