——— Having begun his professional life in a bookbinding workshop, Jacobus Pieter van den Bosch (1868–1948) once fell ill and, after recovering, decided to change employers and join the studio of a decorative artist. That change of heart and course eventually made Van den Bosch one of the key figures of Dutch Art Nouveau - and one of those who helped prepare the ground for the functionalists that followed. He worked in the evenings and studied during the day at the State School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam, where his teachers included the eminent architect Pierre Cuypers. Perhaps because Van den Bosch had been forced from an early age to combine work with study, he became a firm advocate of a rational approach to furniture design, seeking to bring three different worlds closer together: art, craftsmanship, and industry. He put these ideas into practice in 1900, when, together with Hendrik Petrus Berlage, he founded ’t Binnenhuis in Amsterdam. The company, which produced furniture and other interior furnishings, remained in business until 1929. Its founders believed that their task was not merely to create furniture that was well made, thoughtfully designed, functional, affordable, simple, and at the same time pleasing to the eye. They also hoped to educate the taste of the consumer. It was an admirable program. There was just one problem: producing furniture that satisfied all these requirements while remaining genuinely affordable proved remarkably difficult. In the end, ’t Binnenhuis closed its doors, giving way to a new generation of Dutch designers - many of whom would pursue, in a more radical form, the very reconciliation of art, industry, and everyday life that Van den Bosch had been seeking decades earlier.
