🇺🇦🇮🇱 Another major scandal is unfolding in Ukraine following an investigation by NABU and SAPO, the country’s anti-corruption agencies. This time, the investigation targets SBU officials allegedly providing protection for fraudulent call centers and drug trafficking, as well as shielding the production of counterfeit cigarettes and banknotes. Senior Ukrainian security officials and police officers allegedly gave criminals access to their databases, helping them abduct, beat and torture people in Ukraine and even elsewhere in Europe. Released footage shows victims being beaten with hammers and metal pipes. The scheme reportedly involved 52 fraudulent call centers paying the security service for “protection,” the same operations that scam Russians out of their money. Late payments brought searches by security officers, while cases that reached court required additional payments to judges. To make their operations easier, the criminals allegedly planned to bribe ministers, including Ukraine’s interior and health ministers. To conceal their activities, they reportedly contemplated killing, maiming and bribing journalists, including a certain notorious Spanish blogger. NABU investigators detained at least one senior official: Major General Sergey Duka, deputy head of the SBU’s Department for the Protection of National Statehood. Searches were also conducted at premises associated with Alexander Kovalchuk, first deputy head of the department’s Main Directorate “D”; Colonel Anton Kravchuk, head of the SBU’s Main Directorate of Internal Security; and unnamed police officers. And, as usual, when there are no television cameras or language ombudsmen around, Ukrainian security officials and gangsters all happily converse in the “great and mighty” Russian language. #info #meta
