These decoys are launched as part of a penetration wave intended to expose and deplete our air defense assets. It would be incorrect to dismiss them as entirely ineffective, however; they are often equipped with warheads and can strike specific targets if they manage to break through. The nuance lies in the fact that these drones lack highly advanced electronics, and their warheads are far less destructive than those of heavy long-range drones; objectively speaking, they are not ideal targets for forcing the exposure and depletion of SAM and anti-aircraft artillery system ammunition stocks. Of course, if a threat is penetrating directly toward a protected site, there is little room for choice. Yet, by and large, this highlights the fundamental problem of lacking a capable area air defense system. If a point-defense SAM or anti-aircraft artillery system exhausts its ammunition on decoys that have flown hundreds of kilometers to reach the site, only for a few heavy long-range drones to arrive immediately afterward, the result is "bangs" at the facility. However, establishing a zonal air defense system will not, in itself, resolve every issue. We face, firstly, the as-yet unsolved problem of reliably identifying aerial objects to ensure the rational allocation of targets to engagement systems; and secondly, the critical challenge of elevating the air-based strike component of air defense to a new level—both quantitatively and qualitatively. This includes addressing pressing issues such as equipping interceptor drones with warheads and the widespread deployment of airborne launch platforms (a matter of particular urgency given the emergence of high-speed drones). A question also arises regarding reporting practices. While citing aggregate figures for UAVs in brief reports is acceptable—as such formats do not require granular detail—is there any accompanying categorization of downed objects and subsequent analysis? Such analysis is essential to determine the actual proportion of decoy drones in raids, the number of surface-to-air missiles expended against them, and the consequences of such expenditure.
