United States has sharply condemned a legal complaint against Lebanon’s ambassador to the United States, Nada Hamadeh Mouawad, following reports that she contacted Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter to express sympathy after his son was seriously injured in a September 23 terrorist car-ramming attack in the West Bank. Lebanese lawyer Hassan Adel Bazzi filed the complaint on September 29, and the case was referred to Lebanon’s military prosecutor on October 13. The US State Department called the move disgraceful, defended Mouawad’s participation in US-led diplomatic negotiations and urged Lebanese authorities to pursue Hezbollah operatives rather than diplomats.
