——— As you most probably know, the 1932 launch of the legendary ocean liner SS Normandie created a ripple effect across various fields of architecture and industrial design. The ship's exterior design and mechanics, which incorporated the best of Art Deco, functionalism, and, of course, Streamline Moderne, had a tremendous influence on the architects, artists, and designers of the 1930s. For instance, the German designer Klaus-Peter Wilhelm Müller (b. 1904), who crossed the ocean in 1926 and settled in Pittsburgh under the name Peter Müller-Munk, designed a 1935 water pitcher inspired by the outlines of the Normandie. Having studied metalworking and silversmithing in Berlin under Waldemar Ramisch, Müller-Munk initially worked as a silversmith for Tiffany & Co. However, when the Great Depression hit and silver items fell out of demand, he had to shift his focus to industrial design. This pitcher was one of his first major successes in this new field. Mass-produced by Revere Brass and Copper Company, the pitcher was made from copper, a much more affordable material than silver, and plated with chromium. Interestingly, drawing inspiration from the teardrop-shaped funnels of the liner, Müller-Munk mirrored them in his pitcher: the pointed end of the teardrop became the pitcher's spout, while the rounded end formed its back. But that's understandable: while it borrowed from the Normandie aesthetically, the pitcher was essentially the liner's antithesis: it was designed to hold water, not to travel across it after all...
