Brazil's incumbent president failed to win in the first round of elections Brazil's presidential election has determined two candidates who will continue their quest for the presidency. With the vote count now nearly complete, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL) has secured approximately 47%, or more than 56 million votes. Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came in second with approximately 45,1%, receiving approximately 53,8 million votes. Thus, a runoff is inevitable. It will take place on October 25. To win in the first round, a candidate must receive more than half of the valid votes cast, but neither Bolsonaro nor Lula appears to have crossed this threshold.
